Exploring Restorative Yoga and Nutrition: Every day we have choices and are gifted the opportunity to align our inner life and daily habits to support healing and wellness. Interoception is a sense perception that turns our attention inward. It asks the question “what is happening inside my body?” When we can use our body as a barometer to our mind we empower the practice of paying attention. When we can integrate that which we become aware of it can bring us to a place of Healing. Interoception is related to gut function and the nervous system, and when our life puts more emphasis on action versus reflection, or if our nervous system is dysregulated due to trauma or pain, our sense of wellbeing and gut is deeply affected - primarily the digestion and proper assimilation of nutrients. When digestion is affected and not functioning optimally our entire being suffers. Our ability to feel embodied and have access to the inner landscape is compromised. Our ability to identify and receive signals of true hunger and fullness in our bellies diminishes. Neuroscientists are are studying the effects of interoceptive awareness on our brain, our immune systems, and in our emotional lives. The results are astonishing! As it turns out interoception is vital to our health and well being. “our bodies and their symptoms are our biggest allies, because nothing gets our attention as quickly. Our bodies never lie. They are impeccable barometers of how well we’re living in the present and taking care of ourselves.” ~ Christiane Northrup, M.D. Eating is one of our main vital functions; essential to survival, but it is not automatic. It requires decision-making, and demands intellect, and embodied awareness - which is best accessed through a regulated nervous system. Food can be a nurturing source of energy or a depleting trap affecting interoception, lifestyle choices, how we experience the world, and how we interact with others. “when food is pure, the mind is pure, when the mind is pure, concentration is steady, when concentration is achieved one can loosen all the knots of the heart that bind us.” ~ Chandogya Upanishad
Truth for me is that Wellness exists at the core of human life, which is why I give deep respect to the benefits of Restorative Yoga and Holistic Nutrition: Conscious Restand Eating for Health.
